‘Northland Forward Together’ is the collective plan for all four Northland councils to work together to deliver better outcomes for Northland and its people. The strategic vision and values and a programme of work have been developed.
There are twenty projects identified in the Northland Forward Together programme. Each of the twenty projects are assigned to one of the Northland councils - which in turn oversees a region-wide project team.

The Northland CEO Forum and the Northland Mayoral Forum retain oversight of the programme team. Key relationships include: Tai Tokerau Iwi Chief Executives Consortium; Local Government Commission; Northland Transport Alliance; Northland Inc; Sport Northland; Northland Health and the Northland Intersectoral Forum.
In October 2017, fourteen projects were live and at various stages of progress. The other six have a lower priority and are yet to be commenced, or are on hold, while resources are focused on higher activity council functions.
The regional council are currently taking the lead on several projects including:
- Active recreation and sports facilities
- One Voice
- Economic development
Highlights to date
The Northland Transportation Alliance (NTA), a collaborative alliance for transportation and roading services was established in 2016. The NTA collaboration enables Northland councils and the NZ Transport Agency to coordinate work programmes, align contracting investment and introduce substantial efficiencies.
On joint procurement initiatives, the contracting of insurance has been completed resulting in significant savings. A Contact Centre system has also been jointly procured by Far North and Kaipara District Councils.
The Northland Forward Together priority focus remains with the Regional Four Waters Programme, the Regional ICT Programme, Digital Enablement and a review of rating policies and opportunities.
