People often ask what transport assistance is available in Northland, so we’ve put together this list of community transport providers around the region (as at January 2023).

Cancer Society Northland

Who it's for: Cancer patients going to and from cancer-related medical appointments.
About: Volunteers’ own vehicles. Free service.
Wheelchair access: No
When: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-3:00pm. 3-4 days’ notice required.
Where: Within Whangārei district (excluding rural).

Total Mobility

Who it's for: Subsidised transport to help people with disabilities stay connected.
About: Total Mobility swipe card for 50% subsidy with A1 Cabs, Driving Miss Daisy & Kiwi Cabs. An initial fee is required to obtain initial card.
Wheelchair access: Yes. Please notify at time of booking.
When: Monday-Sunday, 24 hours.
Where:  Whangārei district, Kerikeri and Far North locations

Linking Hands

Who it's for: Patients going to and from health-related appointments.
About: Linking Hands vehicles. Free service. Donations appreciated. Approved ACC vendor.
Wheelchair access: On request.
When: Office hours are from 10am to 4pm Monday-Friday. Provides transport 7 days a week.
Where: Warkworth to Whangārei and points in between. Now includes Kaipara.

St John Health Shuttle

Who it's for: The St John Health Shuttle is community-based shuttle service that provides door-to-door transport to and from essential medical and health-related appointments.
About: Pre-booked shuttle service. Volunteer drivers. Purpose-built vehicle. Koha-based community transport – Donations appreciated
Wheelchair access: Yes. Wheelchair capable vehicle with an additional manual side-step with grab-rails for ease of access.
When: Monday-Friday, at least 24 hours’ notice for bookings preferred.
Where: Whangārei, Kerikeri, Kaikohe, Bay of Islands, and Russell

Kaipara Community Health Trust

Who it's for: Patients going to and from health-related appointments.
About: Free service.  Donations appreciated.
Wheelchair access: Yes
When: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. Advance notice required.
Where: Ruawai, Poutō, Waipoua, Tangowahine to appointments in Dargaville or Whangārei.

Angel Flight

Who it's for: Patients and caregivers going to and from long distance non-urgent medical treatment (for those struggling with financial hardship or with no other funded options available).
About: Volunteer pilots in volunteers' own aircraft. Volunteer drivers between airport and hospital available. Donations appreciated.
Wheelchair access: Dependent on caregiver’s assistance.
When: Monday-Sunday. 7 days’ notice preferred.
Where: New Zealand wide, weather dependent and subject to eligibility criteria.

Northland District Health Board (Te Whatu Ora Northland)

Who it's for: Patients with outpatient appointments, parents/caregivers of children with hospital appointments.
About: Bus or shuttle. Free service for patient and a support person. 
Wheelchair access: Yes. Please notify at time of booking.
When: Monday-Friday.  Call 0800 682 684 or go to shuttle information at: northlanddhb.org.nz for times. Advance notice required.
Where: Kaitaia Hospital to/from Whangārei and points between. Whangārei Hospital to/from Auckland Hospital and points between.
