Scam alert

The Northland Regional Council urges prospective mooring vendors/purchasers to remain vigilant for any suspicious emails with requests to transfer money through a Western Union account.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs advises that 'anyone who asks for money to be transferred via a money transfer system like Western Union is likely to be a scammer because this is completely untraceable'.

Western Union says on its site: Sending money to someone you don't know? You could be at risk for consumer fraud. The Western Union Money Transfer service is a great way to send money to people you know and trust. If you need to send money to someone you don't know well, you may be putting yourself at risk for fraud.

The Ministry advises the best course of action is simply to ignore these.
