Environmental Leaders Fund 2020

The Northland Regional Council has funds available for schools to undertake environmental projects in their school grounds or out in the local community. Funding will be provided for projects and initiatives that have positive environmental outcomes.

What is the Environmental Leaders Fund?

The Environmental Leaders Fund (ELF) aims to support Northland schools and early childhood centres, students and children to increase their environmental knowledge, passion and practice. School projects or initiatives that are practical, hands-on, and have a positive impact on Northland's environment will be considered.

How do I apply for funding?

Applications for 2020 have closed.

All Northland schools will be emailed instructions when applications open in 2021.

Do all applications receive funding?

As funding is restricted, we cannot guarantee all applications will be successful.

What kind of project is more likely to succeed?

There are a wide range of projects that have received funding in the past. Applications that relate to regional council core business of biodiversity, pest control and water quality, and consider te ao Māori, have a greater chance of success.

The following projects are unlikely to be successful: recycling projects, murals/artwork and edible gardens.

Examples of projects that received funding in 2019 were Ngunguru schools “Crab Trap Success”, Mangonui schools “Environmentally Conscious Global Citizens” and Te Kura o Hato Hohepa te Kamuras “Stream health monitoring”.

Read the stories about these projects that received funding in 2019.

Are the projects limited to 'within the school gates'?

No, we encourage you to work with community groups in your local area.

How do I make an application?

The online application form will be available from here when applications open in 2021.

What happens after I make an application?

Applicants will be advised of funding decisions in July each year. Funding will be processed on receipt of an official invoice, which must be from the school awarded the funding.

We will contact you to follow up on how your project is progressing, and we do require a brief update from all successful projects by the end of the school year.
