Calculate your carbon footprint

Want to live a lower-carbon lifestyle? Or just curious about the impact of your actions? The first thing you need to do is measure your carbon footprint.

You can use one of the calculators below to estimate the carbon emissions (greenhouse gases) you create at home, at work, at school or while travelling. You may need to try more than one to find a calculator to suit your needs.

Future Fit

According to Gen Less, the average New Zealander’s carbon footprint is around 8.6 tonnes a year. This calculator gives you a broad snapshot of your emissions, helps you choose new actions and challenge friends, and allows you to track and share your progress. It’s a collaboration between the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), Auckland City Council and Wellington City Council.

These calculators cover households and travel, and there’s also a tool that lets you purchase carbon offsets to mitigate your emissions. The New Zealand company behind them offers environmental services and certification programmes.

Carbon Neutral NZ Trust

The Kerikeri branch of the Carbon Neutral NZ Trust has developed a free online calculator to help individuals, small organisations and businesses measure their carbon footprint.

A 10-year planner gives advice about how to make gradual reductions, tracks the user’s changes over time and provides annual updates. Users can make tax-deductible donations to support tree planting and other emission-reducing projects.

In 2021, the Kerikeri branch won the climate change section of NRC’s Environmental Awards for their work on the calculator.
