Karahipi – Scholarships
Northland Regional Council’s Tū i te Ora Scholarship honours and supports tauira who are pursuing study, research, or training connected to the council’s environmental and regulatory mahi. This scholarship provides a foundation for future environmental leaders and champions, contributing to the council’s vision:
“Tiakina te taiao, tuia te here tangata - Nurture the environment, weave the people together.”
NRC scholarship recipient says council great place to kickstart career
Whangārei student Te Karira Ruakere‑Norris was been awarded NRC’s Tū i te ora Scholarship, receiving $4,000 and a paid summer placement with the Māori Relationships Team to gain hands‑on experience across council initiatives. His story highlights how NRC scholarships offer rangatahi a chance to step into meaningful mahi, build networks, and deepen their understanding of te ao Māori and regional planning.

Noah Edwards – 2023 Youth Environmental Leader
Whananaki local Noah Edwards was named the 2023 Youth Environmental Leader for his outstanding mahi protecting Northland’s moana, including more than 50 volunteer hours with Experiencing Marine Reserves, marine pest ID training and snorkel day support. His journey reflects the kinds of hands-on environmental kaupapa that rangatahi can be part of through NRC’s work with youth across Te Taitokerau.
