Enrol to vote

The next Local Government elections are in October 2025. To vote, you need to be enrolled. Make sure you're enrolled and ready to vote so you can have your say on the issues that affect you and your family. If you're on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll, you're automatically enrolled to vote in local council elections.

If you're eligible and voting for the first time, you need to enrol.

You can get enrolment forms at post shops, or you can enrol using a range of other methods:

If you're already on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll, you're automatically enrolled to vote in local elections.

You should have received an enrolment update pack in April 2025. If your details are correct, you don't need to do anything. If you haven’t received this, please check www.vote.nz or phone 0800 36 76 56 to make sure you’re enrolled.

You can check or update your enrolment details by visiting www.vote.nz or by phoning 0800 36 76 56

If you're of Māori descent, you can choose to enrol on either the Māori roll or the general roll. Your choice affects which candidates you can vote for.

If you are on the Māori roll, you'll vote for candidates in our Māori constituency, Te Raki. If you are on the general roll, you'll vote for candidates in a general constituency.

Yes, you can change between the Māori roll and the general roll. This gives you more flexibility to choose the roll that best represents your interests.

To change your roll for these local elections, you will need to do this by 11 July 2025.

Resident electors

If you are registered to vote on the parliamentary electoral roll, you are automatically enrolled to vote in local authority elections. You will receive a voting document so that you can vote by post.

Ratepayer electors

If you are on the parliamentary roll in one area and pay rates on a property in another area, you may be eligible to enrol on the non-resident ratepayer roll.

A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property may also nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (provided the nominated person resides outside the area). Ratepayer Roll enrolment forms are available at www.ratepayer.co.nz or by phoning 0800 922 822.

The Ratepayer Electoral Roll closes on 1 August 2025. Complete your form early so you can get answers to any questions you have about the form or being on the Electoral Roll before the roll closes.

If you think having your details on the electoral roll could threaten your safety, you can apply to be on the confidential unpublished roll. Visit vote.nz for more information on how to apply.
