Northland Regional Council must do core responsibilities well. I chair the Awanui Flood Management Liaison Committee which owes it's success to good local decision making and excellent NRC staff. The Awanui's bank erosion prevention systems should be universal to all rivers. NRC dropped the ball by failing to identify Madagascan Ragwart, but successfully mobilised Government regarding the invasive sea algae Caulerpa. I welcome Government's rating cap and review of regional council roles. Nonsense such as NRC spending $1m on community gardens as 'climate change adaption' must stop. NRC, as the Northland Catchment Authority, needs to competently manage drainage districts, catchments and harbours. Lake Omapere is getting due special attention.

I chair the Regional Transport committee. NZTA, with our MP's support, approved FNDC's 71% government funded back to basics 3-year road improvement program. Northland's State Highway maintenance has been upped but needs much more. Contact Joe 0276015448, www.joecarr.nz
