Macroalgae at Waipu Northland

During recent years there have been several outbreaks of nuisance red algae (seaweed) at Waipu Cove. Similar outbreaks have been recorded elsewhere in Northland and New Zealand. At Waipu Cove it is particularly noticeable as it tends to accumulate at the southern end of the beach near the car park and the surf club, where beach use is highest. In response to these events, Northland Regional Council commissioned NIWA to undertake a review of existing information about the algae at Waipu Cove.
