Summer Interns

If you are a tertiary student looking for summer employment, the Northland Regional Council can offer a great work environment and a range of positions right across the organisation. 

Whether you prefer working in an office setting, or venturing around in the great outdoors, we can cater for students interested in any of the following fields: Biodiversity, Water Monitoring, Environmental Monitoring and Maritime.

All of the positions we have available will be based in Whangārei.

Biodiversity - You will be leading the council’s Wetland Condition Index monitoring programme for 27 wetlands in Northland organising landowner visits and monitoring plots as well as reporting on the results.  We will provide field and technical assistance. You will also be assisting the CoastCare Coordinator with planting days, events and shows and assisting with the summer Check, Clean, Dry programme as needed. For the work, you will need to be physically fit, have good field skills including some wetland plant identification skills and be a good communicator.

Environmental Monitoring - You will be involved in collecting water samples at popular swimming sites as part of our recreational swimming water quality sampling. Other work will also include biological monitoring and sampling such as macroinvertebrates, habitat monitoring and may also include fish surveys. Tasks will also involve some office work including data entry and other general duties.

Monitoring Team - assist with site visits to undertake a stocktake of water take sites during the drier months this summer 2018/2019. The work will include checking water meters, assessment of the frequency of future visits and assisting with a full review of the current water use monitoring programme. The student may also be required to assist with other aspects of consent monitoring including instrument deployment and water quality sampling.

Maritime - You will be involved with assisting the maritime team in a variety of roles which include: GIS, Promapp. Maritime documentation development and other office based work, with some on water patrols, crewing and, mooring work etc.

For any of the student roles above, we are seeking someone with:

  • A full driver’s licence (except for Maritime position)
  • Good computer skills – ability to pick up new systems quickly
  • Studying towards or recently completed a qualification in an area of relevance
