Swimmers don’t mix well with boats and jet skis. To keep everyone safe on the water at Opononi, Northland Regional Council is proposing to create some new zones.
As a regional council, our Harbourmaster’s Office has responsibility to ensure navigation safety on our harbours.
In Opononi, there’s been increase in on-water activities and different vessels using this area, so we’re looking at ways to better manage this shared space.
What’s being proposed?
- Two swimming areas to protect swimmers – no power-driven vessels will be permitted in these areas.
- An access lane to allow vessels to exceed 5 knots when going to and from shore.
- Two 5 knot buoys to mark the 200m area around the wharf and off the boat ramp to help control the speed of vessels.
Have your say
Before making any decisions, we’re keen to hear from the local community and others that use the area.
We encourage online feedback as it saves on time and processing costs. However, if you’d prefer to email, post or drop in your feedback, you can download the feedback form below.
Feedback closes Friday 10 May 2019.
Where to from here?
Once the feedback we receive has been considered, we’ll decide how to proceed.
If things go ahead, new rules would be created under a ‘Harbourmaster’s Direction’ – we’d hope to have these in place for next summer.
