‘Mo Bros’ raise funds and awareness for Movember

From the ‘handlebar’ to the ‘walrus’, throughout November staff put their best mo forward to raise awareness and funds for the Movember Foundation.
An impressive 39 ‘Mo Bros’ retired their razors for the month, raising over $1600 to support research, education and awareness of prostate and testicular cancers and men’s mental health and suicide prevention. The Movember Foundation aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.
Natural Resources Monitoring Manager Jason Donaghy co-ordinated this year’s NRC ‘Grow a Mo’ Movember Team Challenge and said he had received plenty of positive feedback from staff.
“People noted it was good to see men’s mental health getting some attention,” he said.
Personal experiences were the driving force behind why many of the men decided to get involved in this year’s challenge, including Hydrology Monitoring Officer Allen Temple.
“An old friend of mine has lost two brothers to suicide, so I’ve seen the effects,” he said.
Plenty of friendly banter was shared throughout the month – a highlight for many. However, the month lived up to its name of being a challenge, with several participants describing it as a particularly ‘itchy’ experience and noting that their wives weren’t too fond of their new look.
This wasn’t the case for Economist Darryl Jones though, whose wife ended up becoming a fan of the infamous ‘The Gunslinger’. This was an opinion shared by many of NRC’s staff, with Darryl taking the title of ‘Best Mo’ after receiving many votes with hearts drawn on them.
Having maintained his mo for an extra week, Darryl decided to bid farewell to ‘The Gunslinger’ - much to the sadness of the Strategy Governance & Engagement team.
While most of the ‘Mo Bros’ have joined Darryl in picking up their razors, Consents Officer Mujahid Musa hasn’t hopped on the bandwagon as he’s hoping to get a head start for next year.
A massive well done to all the men who participated and thank you to the rest of the staff for your support.
