Hull cleaning

New hull maintenance and cleaning rules to manage the movement of fouled vessels in Northland apply under the Marine Pathway Plan.

A clean hull prevents marine pests from spreading into new places and infecting our vulnerable marine environment. The rules require you to clean your hull before moving your boat, not after.

Hulls coated with ablative paints must be hauled-out to prevent the release of harmful biocide chemicals during cleaning.

Exemptions apply:

  • When vessels travel for a haul-out, provided an exemption from the rules is first acquired from the regional council and the haul out is done within 24 hours of arrival; and
  • When there is an emergency relating to the safety of a vessel or the people on board.
