Māori Language Week is running from 10 to 16 September, this year's theme being 'Kia kaha te reo Māori' - To make the language strong'.
This Māori langauage week teachers and educators are encouraged to go beyond the basics in the classroom.
It isn’t just about teaching Māori words or sentence structures. Teachers are encouraged to teach Māori songs or educate students on the cultural significance of the local geography.
The Ministry of Education has a number of resources with Māori translations for science, math and art giving teachers the ability to bring more Māori into different subject areas. As part of Māori Language Week 2018, the Māori Language Commission will be releasing new te reo resources.
