What is a Water Shortage Direction (WSD)?
Under section 329 of the Resource Management Act, regional councils can issue water shortage directions at any time there is a serious temporary shortage of water in its region or any part of its region. A water shortage direction imposes restrictions on water users in specified areas. These directions are similar to restrictions issued by the district councils for people on municipal water supplies.
WSDs are in effect for 14-day periods, however should the dry conditions continue to prevail the water shortage direction will be re-issued so that means the restrictions will rollover.
