Rāhui tapu / marine protected area research notification – Mimiwhangata and Rakaumangamanga

Scientific research, conservation activities and monitoring involving the removal, damage or destruction of fish, aquatic life or seaweed are permitted in the rāhui tapu marine protected areas, as long as they are undertaken by:

• a hapū or iwi
• Crown research institutes
• recognised Māori research entities
• tertiary education providers
• regional councils
• Department of Conservation
• Ministry for Primary Industries
• an incorporated society that studies marine life, natural history, or mātauranga Māori.

If you’re doing research in the rāhui tapu marine protected areas, you can tell us about your project here. Notifying us of your research means we can respond appropriately if our team see you working in the area or members of the public report seeing you take marine life as part of your research.

Your research notification will be shared with local hapū working in partnership with us to implement the rāhui tapu marine protected area rules.

Your research is a valuable tool for assessing the impact of our marine protection rules. We appreciate your support to increase our understanding of the marine environment in the rāhui tapu marine protected areas.
