Mercury light bulb disposal
Safely dispose of energy efficient light bulbs at Far North refuse transfer stations. The Far North District Council is supporting a nationwide initiative to encourage the safe disposal of energy efficient light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
Special recycling containers for the safe storage of discarded bulbs with mercury content are available at Refuse Transfer Stations (RTS) across the district.
The discarded energy efficient lights and fluorescent tubes are recycled to recover their mercury, aluminium, phosphor powder and glass content.
Energy efficient light bulbs can be deposited in the safe-storage bins free of charge, but to cover the costs of having the facility available, a small charge will be applied to the disposal of fluorescent tubes.
