Use and Value Maps

What is a Use and Value Map?

In order to identify various uses and values within the coastal marine area of Northland, the Council developed draft maps, based on information available at the time. The Council undertook an extensive public consultation process, involving a range of stakeholders and interest groups, to ensure the maps accurately represented the uses and values in Northland.

The maps include only spatially identifiable uses and values within the coastal marine area. Some uses and values are not included, as they are unable to be shown on maps or there isn’t the kind of evidence available to show them on maps in the Northland region. These include areas of high natural character, outstanding seascapes, some areas of recreational value, significant habitat and other biodiversity values.

As the maps do not provide a complete picture of the coastal marine area, they should be used as a guidance tool only and they can not be used independently to determine on the suitability of an area for aquaculture.

While the Use and Value Maps were initially produced to spatially identify constraints to aquaculture, they contain information that is relevant to more than just aquaculture development.

How to access the maps

The Use and Value Maps contain a large amount of information. Some of the quality of this information is lost when the maps are reduced.

We have therefore decided not to include the maps on this website – instead, they can be viewed at:

  • the Northland Regional Council offices
  • public libraries throughout Northland

Alternatively, if you require a single map, you can contact us with your email address and the map you would like and we will email it to you as a PDF or post it to you as a hard copy (at a small cost).

Email: mailroom@nrc.govt.nz

The maps can also be purchased as a set on CD or in hard copy. Please contact us for more information.

Please note that the maps will ultimately be used only to help indicate more or less appropriate areas, and that the detail of Plan Change 4 will be the defining guide used in AMA decision making.

Northland is divided into 27 maps. If you would like us to email a map of the area you are interested in, either use the Northland Map as a guide to which map you require, or select from the list below.
