Pest Management Review
Northland Regional Council’s Regional Pest Management Strategies (RPMS) are currently under review.
The review is expected to take about 18 months and aims to identify if the current strategies need to be changed to better manage pests in Northland. It will also look at including new pest species.
The Northland Regional Council (NRC) intends to split the RPMS review into three stages as follows: Marine, Plant and Animal pests. This is because:
• the stakeholders/interest groups are likely to be different for each environment;
• the approaches to pest management are different for each group;
• a staged approach will make the review process more manageable for NRC staff and submitters alike.
Each stage of the review will commence with a discussion document which outlines the review process, the principles of pest management and summarises the issues around the management of pests in each environment. It also gives a timeframe and instructions on providing feedback on the issues raised.
Feedback on the discussion documents will be used to draft Pest Management Strategies for each group, which will then be publicly notified and open to submissions.
