Mangrove Management Support Programme

About the programme

The Mangrove Management Support Programme is a fund that was made available during the 2010-2011 financial year to assist Northland communities keen to better manage mangroves in their areas.

Mangroves. The fund was established to help cover some of the costs of assessing the environmental effects and applying for resource consents for community-led mangrove management initiatives.

The aim is to assist projects that address drainage issues, public access or other community wellbeing issues that have arisen as a result of mangrove expansion in coastal areas.  Participation in the programme does not guarantee resource consent will be granted, but it does ensure that environmental effects are appropriately assessed and consent applications are professionally prepared.

Update on progress

Twelve projects were submitted to the NRC in response to the initial call for expression of interest in the programme.  Seven of these projects have progressed through to the stage where Assessments of Environmental Effects have been completed and Resource Consent Applications have now been lodged.
