Expressions of interest
In June 2007, the Whangarei District Council and Northland Regional Council sought expressions of interest from design and build contractors to undertake the construction of the new Northland Events Centre at Okara Park in Whangarei.
The closing date for expressions of interest was 7 July 2008.
Five firms shortlisted
A joint Northland Regional-Whangarei District Council steering group shortlisted five firms from the 14 which filed expressions of interest for the project.
The four-member steering group members were:
- Whangarei Mayor Stan Semenoff
- Whangarei District Council CEO Mark Simpson
- Northland Regional Council Chairman Mark Farnsworth
- Northland Regional Council CEO Ken Paterson
The five companies shortlisted were (in no particular order):
- Whangarei-based Kerr Construction
- Mt Eden-based NZ Strong
- Ebert Construction which operates nationally from regional offices in Wellington and Auckland
- Manukau City-based Hawkins Construction
- East Tamaki-based Argon Construction
Firms were short-listed on a variety of criteria including their experience, ability to complete a project on time and on budget and the strength of their financial position.
Design and build
The five shortlisted companies have now been invited to submit proposals outlining the facility they could provide with the $16 million available.

Closing date for tenders
Tenderers should lodge their tenders on or before 4.00pm, Friday 12 September 2008.
Tenders should be in a sealed envelope or package, marked “Tender for Northland Events Centre” and delivered to:

and marked for the attention of Waren Warfield.
Late submissions and faxed, emailed and other electronic submissions of tenders will not be considered, unless by prior agreement.
