The Minister of Local Government, Rodney Hide, has poured cold water on the hopes of two Northland councils pushing to become unitary authorities. The Mayors of the Far North and Whangarei District Councils are leading the charge to abolish the Northland Regional Council, take over its functions and divide its assets between them. But Radio NZ has been told the campaign is doomed and a waste of ratepayers money.
