About the project

The Lake Ōmāpere Restoration and Management Project aims to develop and implement a voluntary lake management strategy that will work towards improving the health of the lake and helping to establish the Lake Ōmāpere trustees in their role as Kaitiakitanga.

The project has six major components:

  1. Development of a Lake Management Strategy;
  2. Assist the lake trustees in their role as Kaitiakitanga;
  3. Integrated catchment management;
  4. Water quality monitoring;
  5. Development of a Weed Management Programme; and
  6. Enhancement of indigenous biodiversity.

The project includes ongoing community involvement to identify the issues affecting the lake and develop and work towards a goal for the future of the lake.

This project is a joint initiative between the Lake Ōmāpere trustees and the Northland Regional Council, and is funded by the Ministry for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund. Other key stakeholders who will be involved include:

  • landowners;
  • local iwi and hapū;
  • Far North District Council;
  • Department of Conservation;
  • local schools; and
  • local community.
