Government assistance
The Government has approved a range of support measures for farmers, following the decision to declare a medium level drought in Northland.
Currently, the main assistance measures available are:
- Tax assistance under the Income Equalisation Scheme. This is automatic, and allows farmers to transfer the proceeds of the sale of capital stock across their balance date without attracting tax.
- Management advice: funding is available from MAF for field days, publications, etc. to provide advice and information to farmers on management options.
- Funding Rural Support Trust Northland to provide facilitation and support to affected farmers, and to work with farmers who require welfare support.
- Standard level of financial assistance via the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Work and Income.
The need for additional measures like Rural Assistance Payments is being closely monitored and assessed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and will be activated if necessary.
