Registration of Passenger Transport Services
In accordance with Section 49 of the Transport Services Licensing Act 1989, the Northland Regional Council is required to register all passenger services operating in the Northland region. This includes ferry and bus services that pick up or let down passengers throughout Northland, and are available to members of the public.
A Regional Council may, however, decline to register a passenger service under this section where the service proposed:
(a) Is likely to have a material adverse effect on the financial viability of any contracted service;
(b) Is likely to increase the net cost to the Regional Council of any contracted service; or
(c) Is contrary to sound traffic management or any other environmental factor identified by the Regional Council as being of importance to its region.
Having registered their service, operators are required to notify the Regional Council of any changes to fares, timetables, routes and operating areas that may occur.
There is no cost involved in the registering of services.
Do I need to register?
If you are operating any type of commercial passenger transport operation either in, or passing through, Northland, then yes, you must register your service.
