Our role

We are involved in land transport in several ways.

We also undertake studies relating to transport.  A review of the Regional Land Transport Strategy was completed in 2006, and the Northland Transport Network Study is currently being compiled in conjunction with BECA consultants.  This is due for completion in mid-2008 and will replace the Northland Integrated Transport Study released in March 2002.

The Northland Regional Council is only one of the organisations involved in the provision and administration of transport in Northland. Other organisations and their functions include:

Land Transport New Zealand

Land Transport NZ was the merger of Transfund New Zealand and the Land Transport Safety Authority. This central Government agency is responsible for:

  • allocating funding to road control authorities
  • developing policy on road safety such as driver licensing and speed limits
  • promoting road safety through a range of educational programmes
  • develops land transport safety standards

Transit New Zealand

Transit New Zealand manages the State Highway network, most of which is owned by the Crown.  In Northland, we have six state highways - SH1, SH10, SH11, SH12, SH14 and SH15A.

District Councils

District Councils own and manage the public roads in New Zealand. District Councils in our region include the Far North District Council, Whangarei District Council and Kaipara District Council.

New Zealand Police

The New Zealand Police are responsible for enforcing legislation governing driver behaviour and vehicle road worthiness.
