What is the Freight Study all about?
The Upper North Island Freight Study, August 2010 provides information on current and future inter–regional freight movements in order to better understand freight flows and how these might change over time.
This study was commissioned by the Inter-regional Transport Planning Integration Group. The Group is convened by the Ministry of Transport and comprises officers from Northland Regional Council, Auckland Regional Council, Environment Waikato, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Auckland Regional Transport Authority, KiwiRail and both the Auckland/Northland and Waikato/Bay of Plenty regions of the New Zealand Transport Agency.
The study is largely based on the findings of the National Freight Demands Study (NFDS), a major study undertaken in 2008 for the Ministries of Transport and Economic Development and for Land Transport New Zealand. The approach taken in this study was to estimate flows of key commodities for 2006-2007 comprising about two thirds of total freight movements, and scale these up to national totals. The National Freight Demands Study also forecasts future freight flows for the nominal 2031 year.
While the 2006-2007 position identified in the NFDS is the best estimate available of current flows and forms the basis for likely future flows, it should be recognised that it is an estimate taken at a single point in time. A number of changes affecting freight flows have occurred since 2008 and changes will continue to occur.
