Regional Land Transport Strategy
Vision
“Northland has an integrated, equitable, responsive, safe and sustainable land transport system”
The purpose of the Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) is to provide a planning framework for the development of land transport in the region for the next 10 years.
The Strategy has been developed in accordance with the requirements of Section 175 of the Land Transport Act, 1998. It must also align itself with the following objectives of the Land Transport Management Act 2003, which are to:
- Assist economic development
- Assist personal safety and personal security
- Improve access and mobility
- Protect and promote public health
- Ensure environmental sustainability
Two additional objectives, considered important to Northland, have also been added. These are:
- Integration of land use and transport planning
- Ensuring an affordable and financially sustainable transport network
This vision and objectives are supported by a series of outcomes, actions and monitoring indicators listed in the full document.
The Strategy is reviewed at least every three years, and can also be altered or added to at any time in response to changing transport needs. The first Regional Land Transport Strategy for Northland was prepared in 1993, then reviewed in 1996, 1999 and 2006.
Regional Land Transport Committee
The Committee is primarily responsible to ensure the objectives of the Regional Land Transport Strategy are met.
It has representatives from:
- Northland Regional Council
- Far North District Council
- Whangarei District Council
- Kaipara District Council
- Land Transport NZ
- NZ Transport Association
- Toll New Zealand
- Ontrack
- New Zealand Police
- Transit New Zealand
- NZ Bus & Coach Association
- Automobile Association
There are also individuals representing environmental sustainability and cultural interests.
