Motorway Extension Winner For All

The Puhoi to Wellsford motorway extension will be a win:win for everyone, says Northland Regional Council Deputy Chairman John Bain.

Cr Bain, who has chaired the Council’s Regional Transport Committee for the past three years, says not only is the extension vital to Northland but it will also benefit Auckland in the long-run.

“All of Northland will benefit from the motorway extension and in time Super City Mayor Brown will see that Aucklanders will also,” he says.

“We look towards a positive working relationship with Mayor Len Brown and his council.”

Cr Bain has worked with the Regional Transport Committee – whose members include representatives from the Kaipara, Far North and Whāngārei District Councils, the NRC and the New Zealand Transport Agency – throughout the development of the motorway extension project.

“The committee has full confidence that the Transport Minister has the wellbeing of Northland in mind,” he says.

“We have an ongoing relationship with central government through our work over the past three years and Minister Joyce knows the importance of the link for the promotion of Northland,” he says.

“More and more Aucklanders travel to Northland for work and play and the extension will ease congestion and open up access to our region.”

Cr Bain says Northland currently has relatively poor access to Auckland and vice versa, which hampers economic growth.

“The motorway extension is really the first step in a long-term approach to improving Northland’s transport infrastructure, an approach that will benefit everyone.”
