The many environmental education opportunities offered by Northland’s harbours have been highlighted to 29 teachers at two special Regional Council workshops in Waitangi this week.

Teachers from Ahipara to Ruawai gathered in the Bay of Islands on Wednesday and Thursday to learn more about how to use the area’s harbour as a fun, yet informative, teaching tool.

Northland Regional Council Environmental Education Officer Susan Botting says the Council held the 27 and 28 May workshops – an annual event - because of ongoing school interest in caring for the region’s harbours.

Ms Botting says the workshops aimed to build on participants’ existing environmental education knowledge to help teach children to create and drive projects that care for harbours.

The 27 May workshop catered for 19 primary and intermediate teachers with a secondary workshop held the following day.

The workshops examined some of the key challenges facing the Bay of Islands due to increasing demand on its resources.
