Week left for Regional Councillor nominations
Would-be Northland Regional Council members have just one week left to get their nominations in if they wish to stand as a candidate in the 13 October local authority elections.
The Council’s Electoral Officer Linda Stansfield says as of today, nominations had been received from seven people, including four sitting Councillors.
Four Regional Councillors are required for the Whangarei District Constituency, three from the Far North, and one for the Kaipara Constituency.
Ms Stansfield says anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll. However, she says that legally all nomination forms must be in her hands by noon on Friday 24 August and warns would-be candidates they would be wise not to leave delivering their applications until the 11th hour.
“If there is any sort of problem with a nomination form that can’t be rectified by noon on the 24th, then legally that candidate’s nomination is declared invalid. It’s best for all concerned that people get their nominations in in plenty of time.”
Ms Stansfield says nomination forms and candidate information booklets are available from the Northland Regional Council’s Head Office, 36 Water Street, Whangarei. Copies can also be requested by phoning 0800 002 004 or can be downloaded from the Council’s website www.nrc.govt.nz
Voting papers will be sent out from 21 September 2007 and must be mailed to the Council by midday on Election Day, 13 October 2007.
For further information on standing as a candidate, visit the Council’s website or contact the Electoral Officer on 0800 002 004.
