Nominations open for Regional Councillor hopefuls
Now is your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in the future of the Northland region.
Nominations for candidates wishing to stand in the October 13 local authority elections – held every three years - have now opened.
Electoral Officer Linda Stansfield says anyone keen to stand as a candidate for one of the eight positions on the Northland Regional Council has until noon Friday 24 August to get their nominations in.
“We encourage anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand. The Council now has a broader involvement outside the environmental stewardship mandate it was originally established under.”
“Regional Councils are involved in social, economic and cultural issues, as well as environmental. From the providing $500,000 to the community to enhance the environment, through to moving forward regional infrastructure like the proposed Marsden Point rail link, the Chairman and Councillors take on a strategic leadership role for our region.”
“We need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the opinions of our diverse community.”
Ms Stansfield says anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.
Four Regional Councillors are required for the Whangarei District Constituency, three from the Far North, and one for the Kaipara Constituency.
