Almost 500 submissions to NRC’s draft ‘Community Plan’

Almost 500 submissions have been received on the Northland Regional Council’s Draft Long Term Council Community Plan.

Council Strategic Development Manager Linda Stansfield says 441 submissions were received on the ‘Draft Northland Community Plan 2006-2016’ during an official month-long submission period that ended at 3pm on Friday. (Subs: Fri 05 May)

Another roughly 50 late submissions received between 3pm Friday and this morning will also be put before Regional Councillors, “to be considered at their discretion”.

Councillors are expected to consider submissions on the Draft Plan – which sets out the direction the Regional Council will take over the next decade – during public hearings in Whangarei on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 May.

Ms Stansfield says many submissions address Council’s plans for a proposed ‘Regional Recreational Facilities Rate’, part of which could part-fund a regional events centre.  Other submissions cover a range of issues including water quality, harbour management, aquaculture, genetic engineering and transport.

Submissions are still being collated and a breakdown of submissions by topic is not expected until later this week.

Ms Stansfield says in 2004 when the Council had drafted its previous – and first - Long Term Council Community Plan, it had attracted about 250 submissions which had in turn resulted in more than two dozen changes to the plan.
