$23,000 extra allows bus service to operate on public holidays
An extra $23,000 funding is to enable Whangarei Bus Services to operate on public holidays, beginning with Northland Anniversary Day on Monday. (Monday 30 January)
The Northland Regional Council administers the service, which is jointly funded by the Whangarei District Council and Land Transport New Zealand.
Chris Powell, Regional Transport Team Leader for the Regional Council, says funding has now been confirmed for public holidays, starting with Anniversary Day on Monday.
The $23,000 extra funding will take the total operating cost of the service to almost $300,000 annually.
Mr Powell says until now, the service has had a policy of not operating on public holidays or Sundays. It will now run its Saturday timetable on public holidays, but will still not operate on Sundays.
Signs advising of the new holiday hours will be placed in buses to alert patrons.
