20-plus apply for Regional Council CEO job

More than 20 people have applied to become the Northland Regional Council’s next Chief Executive Officer.

A month-long application period closed recently with 22 people – including several from overseas – officially putting their names forward.

Regional Council Chairman Mark Farnsworth says although there are some international applicants, the bulk come from New Zealand, including several from Northland.

“There is a very broad spectrum of very experienced candidates who have applied.”

Meanwhile, Mr Farnsworth says as well as the 22 applicants, the company handling the recruitment process for the Council is also expected to approach an as-yet-unknown number of additional possible recruits to see if they might also be interested in applying.

“This is a pretty standard process when attempting to fill a very senior position like this one and is designed to ensure that Council has the best possible number and mix of applicants to choose from.”

The CEO position became vacant with the departure of longtime staff member Warren MacLennan early last month.  Senior Regional Council Manager Tony Phipps will continue to serve as Acting Chief Executive Officer until a permanent appointment is made.

Mr Farnsworth says a shortlisting process for the existing 22 applicants is already underway.  The Council hopes to appoint a new CEO by Christmas.
