17 pile moorings approved for Parua Bay marina
Developers of a new marina at Solomons Pt, Parua Bay have been granted resource consent to build up to 17 new pile moorings.
Parua Bay Marina Development Limited has secured the consents needed for the pile moorings in an area of Whangarei Harbour immediately adjacent to its previously approved Solomons Pt marina.
The application was heard in Whangarei in late February, with a two-member Northland Regional Council Hearings Committee, chaired by Cr Lorraine Hill, releasing its decision recently. (Weds 15 March)
The decision enables the applicant the opportunity to provide space for 17 swing moorings it already has consent for as pile moorings in a more confined area immediately alongside its marina berth.
The Committee noted the 17 pile moorings would take up less space than the equivalent number of boats on swing moorings and also offer greater security, supervision of - and access - to boats.
With the consent conditions proposed, the moorings would have minimal adverse environmental effects and would be an appropriate use of a coastal marine area already used for boating activity and which had already been modified due to reclamation.
The Committee granted the applicant all eight resource consents needed to install and use the pile moorings. The consents are valid for between three and 35 years.
The Committee’s decision is now open to appeal for three weeks.
