$10,000 sustainable management scholar wanted

The annual hunt has begun for a university student keen to receive a $10,000 Northland Regional Council Sustainable Management Scholarship.

The scholarship – open to students from any New Zealand university - is used to help fund Master’s level degree research related to the sustainable management of Northland's land, water, air or coastal resources.

Regional Council Environmental Education Officer Susan Botting says students from Northland – or with close links to the region – are especially encouraged to apply for the 2007 (subs: crrct 2007) scholarship.

The current scholarship holder – Auckland University student Debbie Johnson – is researching the sustainable management of the natural resources of Taiharuru catchment in the Whangarei Heads area.

Applications close on Sunday 1 October, 2006, with successful students notified in November.

The successful applicant is expected to:

  • Give a brief presentation on their proposed thesis to the Council's March, 2007 meeting
  • Submit a mid-year progress report
  • Present their completed thesis and its findings to the Council's March, 2008 meeting.

Full details about the scholarship, including an application form, application tips and suggested research topics can be found on the Council’s website under the Environmental Education section.
