Kaikohe wastewater to be disinfected
Kaikohe’s wastewater will be disinfected within two years in an upgrade to the current treatment system.
The Far North District Council (FNDC) has been granted resource consent to continue operating its Kaikohe Wastewater Treatment Plant for the next decade under tighter monitoring conditions and with an upgrade due within two years.
A two-member Northland Regional Council Hearings Committee, chaired by Cr Lorraine Hill, heard the FNDC’s application for the several consents required for the plant at a hearing in Kaikohe last month.
In a decision released this week, the Committee grants the FNDC resource consents to discharge treated wastewater from Kaikohe to an unnamed tributary of the Wairoro Stream, to discharge contaminants (mainly odours) to air and to discharge minor seepage and leakage to ground.
Listing its reasons for the decision, the Committee notes that in general, any adverse environmental effects will be no more than minor. The upgrade will provide a significant improvement over the existing conditions, given that it provides screening of influent and disinfection of effluent. There are also substantially increased monitoring requirements associated with the amended consent.
The consents are subject to a raft of conditions and expire in 2021.
