Extra bus services for Maunu, Otangarei

Demand by users will see Whangarei’s popular public bus service expanded to include several new Otangarei stops - and offer a new service to Maunu - from later this month.

The Northland Regional Council administers the Whangarei Bus Service and Council spokesperson Chris Powell says the changes will take effect from Monday 30 May.

Mr Powell – the Regional Council’s Regional Transport Team leader - says the existing bus service route to Whangarei Hospital will be extended to include Maunu, through as far south as Heritage Park.

About 20 new bus stops will service the Maunu run, including stops in Puriri Park and Kowhai Park Rds, Kotare and Tui Crescents and Kiwi Ave.

Similarly, Whangarei Bus Service’s existing Otangarei route will from 30 May also include Jack St, where five new stops have been designated.

Mr Powell says timetables showing full details of the new Maunu and additional Otangarei routes will be available from Whangarei Bus Services or the Northland Regional Council’s Water St offices from Monday 23 May.

The Bus Service is administered by the Regional Council and funded by the Whangarei District Council and the national transport funding body Land Transport New Zealand.

Mr Powell says almost 17,500 passengers used the increasingly popular bus service during April.

“These new services reflect the growing demand for public transport in the Whangarei area. There are a number of potential new passenger transport services to be investigated by the Regional Council over the next year or so.”
