$5000 NRC Sustainable Management Scholarship awarded
A Northland woman studying resource planning at Otago University is the latest recipient of a Northland Regional Council $5000 Sustainable Management Scholarship.
NRC Chairman Mark Farnsworth and 2005 scholarship winner Hilary Boyes.
Hilary Boyes, 22, is currently living in Dunedin while she studies towards a Master of Regional and Resource Planning.
She is the 2005 recipient of an annual Council scholarship used to help fund Masters level degree research related to the sustainable management of Northland's land, water, air or coastal resources.
Ms Boyes’ thesis is entitled “Implementing Sustainable Tourism in Northland” and she gave a brief presentation on her work to Councillors at a recent full Council meeting in Whangarei.
She expects to present her completed thesis and its findings to Councillors in a year’s time.
Regional Council Education Officer Susan Botting says students from any university in New Zealand can apply for the scholarship, with students from - or closely associated with - Northland particularly encouraged to do so.
Past scholarship winners include a student studying the behaviour of storm surges in Bream Bay and another developing a farming decision making model for minimising the impact of Tropical Grass Webworm in the Far North.
