$20,000 NRC environmental funding available to schools

Northland schools aiming to boost their environmental education are being encouraged to apply for a share in a special Northland Regional Council award.

The Council has set aside $20,000 for its annual Environmental Curriculum Award, which aims to foster excellence in environmental education.

Regional Council Environmental Education Consultant Susan Karels says Northland schools can be awarded up to a maximum of $2000 each from the award fund for their efforts to educate children in, about and for the region’s environment.

“Working with schools and their communities to improve their environment through active participation is the award’s primary focus.”

Mrs Karels says previous winning projects have included water quality testing, waste minimisation, streamside planting, worm farming and wetland enhancement.

Award winners demonstrate ways their schools are putting effort into sustainably managing Northland’s natural and physical resources, a key Northland Regional Council goal.

Mrs Karels says Northland schools have already been sent application forms, however, forms can also be downloaded from the Council’s website www.nrc.govt.nz

Completed applications need to be sent to the Council’s Water St, Whangarei office by 5pm Friday, 13 May 2005.

Mrs Karels says applications should stimulate students into taking their own ongoing environmental education action and enhance student knowledge of Northland’s natural environment.
