Living in Northland

Sites removed

The following sites have been removed from the programme because they have had consistently good (or poor) water quality over the last four summers. These sites will not be tested from summer 2007/08  but will be reassessed for inclusion in the swimming water quality sampling programme after five years.

Sites with poor water quality

The following sites have had consistently high bacterial levels over the last four years, making them unsuitable for swimming at any time. These sites should have permanent warning signs erected and will be investigated further, independently of the swimming water quality sampling programme.

Site description Site number Grade
Langs Beach Stream (southern end by toilets) 100686 Very poor
Ocean Beach Stream 102077 Very poor
Otiria Stream 105376 Very poor
Wairoa Stream, Ahipara 105053 Very poor

Sites with good water quality

The following sites have had consistently low bacterial levels over the last four years, making them suitable for swimming most of the time. However, bacterial levels can still increaseafter heavy rain. We recommend that you do not swim after heavy rain, if the water is dirty or if there is a warning sign erected.
