Flood risk reduction
River Management Schemes
The Kaeo Stop Bank under construction in April 2009.
The Council oversees the operation of River Management Schemes for the Kaeo, Kaihu and Awanui Rivers.
Management of these schemes is undertaken in accordance with a River Management Plan in consultation with Liaison Committees.
The aim of the schemes is to reduce river flood risk. The schemes typically involve the maintenance of scheme assets, such as stopbanks and floodgates, and the removal of accumulated sediments or vegetation from river channels.
These works are generally funded via income from targeted rates.
Priority Rivers Project
This project aims to identify and reduce river flood-hazard risk within priority river catchments in Northland. This is to be achieved through the development of flood risk reduction plans which will guide the prioritisation and implementation of flood risk reduction measures.
The initial phase of the project involves the assessment of flood risk and how this can be reduced. River flood risk reduction plans will be produced from this, and these will be used as a basis for prioritising flood risk reduction throughout the Priority River catchments. These plans are scheduled for completion by June 2010.
Following this, the flood risk reduction actions identified in the flood risk reduction plans will be prioritised and implemented following consultation with affected stakeholders and communities.
