Environment

Our role

Our role is to protect the productive capacity of land in the region and support and promote sustainable land management practices.

Land management

When Northlanders are thinking about how to use their land we want more people to choose ways that protect soil.

We support landowners to see the financial and social worth of looking after land in a way that will protect it and meet needs now and into the future.  We want people to be aware of, and use tools, to reduce erosion. We do this by:

  • working with landowners to develop plans for their land to help protect the soil and other life;
  • partnering with rural community groups to encourage soil conservation;
  • monitoring how land is used and its effects;
  • using rules and resource consents to direct what can happen on land and how change is managed;
  • providing publications, running seminars and workshops; and
  • funding projects through our Environment Fund.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals in an area.  We are one of the organisations whose job it is to maintain and protect our biodiversity.

Our biodiversity is special; we want Northlanders to recognise, take pride in and assist to protect it.  We want more native plants in the ground, more formally protected areas for the native animals of our region.  It would be great to stop the increase in the number of threatened plants or animals.

Because biodiversity is such a local issue, we know our sharpest tool is local communities.  We get involved by:

  • funding projects through our Environment Fund;
  • working with other funders and agencies who look after biodiversity;
  • provide education through publications and workshops; and
  • linking projects and people.
